Do you say, "I need a breath mint," or "I need a Tic Tac?" Many people say the latter, because Tic Tacs have become one of the most well-known breath mints across the country. They weren't always called Tic Tacs, though. In fact, they got the name after they were released, thanks to the sound they make while rattling around inside the container. In 1980 they started a marketing campaign, stating that each Tic Tac was just 1.5 calories. It caught on, spiking Tic Tac sales and making them a household name. On the back of this success Tic Tac came out in many more flavors, but all with the same small pill shape. While Tic Tacs are now closer to 2 calories per pill, they did come out with a sugar-free version, sweetened with xylitol, that are zero calories.
