When Adams & Brooks opened their Los Angeles store in 1932, they sold just one treat: caramel popcorn. They were successful even though they opened during the Great Depression. One of their tactics was selling popcorn to people waiting on line at movie theaters, a practice that theater owners brought inside their doors. Yes, Adams & Brooks originated popcorn during movies. They also created a line of carnival candy that lasts through today. The company grew quickly, and in 1955 were contracted to handle all candy concessions at the newly opened Disneyland. In the 23 years between opening and the Disneyland contract they added many different confections, including Whirly Pops, Unicorn Pops, P'Nuttles, and Coffee Rio. Their Whirly Pops and Unicorn pops come in dozens of varieties, and rank among the most popular lollipops in America. Today they have enen more choices, including Cup-O-Gold, which is like a peanut butter cup only with marshmallow in the middle.
