Surely you're familiar with the candy brands Mike and Ike, and Hot Tamales. You can see them on grocery store shelves and even sometimes in checkout lines. They're part of the Just Born candy company, located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The company founder, Sam Born, a Russian immigrant, is credited with a few key inventions. First was a machine that inserted sticks into lollipops. Previously done by hand, this machine allowed confectioners to churn out dozens of lollipops every minute, fueling demand. Later he is credited for inventing chocolate sprinkles, or jimmies. His son, Bob, was also an inventor. He was part of the Just Born team that standardized the production process for marshmallow Peeps, which went on to become one of the best-selling seasonal candies in the country. Peeps are now sold year-round in various styles and varieties. Just Born also manufactures bulk jelly beans in a dozen different colors and flavors.
