Not many candies have had their own segments on the popular show Myth Busters, but when the show first started out the creators wanted to tackle the Pop Rocks myth. Started not long after Pop Rocks hit the market in 1975, the myth claims that eating Pop Rocks while drinking cola can make your stomach explode. What the rumormongers didn't realize was that Pop Rocks is just like cola, in that it's a carbonated substance. That's why it fizzes. The process of creating Pop Rocks is so complex that it took nearly 20 years for General Foods to turn their patent on the concept into a product. Due to short shelf life, the initial run of Pop Rocks lasted less than a decade, but it has been brought back to the market in a variety of styles. In addition to the original, you can find sour Pop Rocks, sugar-free Pop Rocks, and even Pop Rocks gum.
