Joseph Fralinger might not have invented Salt Water Taffy, but he sure made it famous. While working a taffy stand in Atlantic City he came up with a simple idea: sell taffy by the box. At the time it was sold by the individual piece. Customers bought up these boxes in droves, creating a trend that led to a one-pound box of Salt Water Taffy beind dubbed the Atlantic City Souvenir. His shop is still running on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Meanwhile, salt water taffy has spread nationwide, available in 16 different flavors. The Fralinger's plant produces over 600,000 pounds of salt water taffy every year, which amounts to over 600 pieces every minute. You can now find salt water taffy not just at the Atlantic City Boardwalk in one-pound boxes, but in bulk bins across the country and on the internet.
