Today Mars, Incorporated makes so much more than just candy. But at the company was only focused on candy making. After his father, Frank, failed in a few candy making ventures, Forrest Mars found inspiration in a malted milkshake and created the Milky Way bar. It was an instant hit and made Mars a household name. (The Mars bar only came later, and was released in the UK.) Less than a decade later came the Snickers bar, which secured Mars's place among the top American confectioneries. By the end of the 1930s the company had gotten into pet food, where it still has a large market share. Perhaps its greatest iintroduction came in 1941, when Forrest Mars introduced M&M Candies. Later famous candies include the Twix bar, 3 Musketeers, and Skittles candies. In more recent years, Mars, along with Berkshire Hathaway, bought out Wrigley Company, famous for its chewing gum. Once a competitor -- Mars created Orbit gum -- the combined company forms one of the largest confectioneries in America.
